Hey guys! It’s Valentine’s day, and I thought, being single myself, that everyone loves romance from time to time and I decided to give you the top 10 romance I’ve read. It can be for a lonely Valentine day or when you want a nice cozy read. I do admit that I don’t really read that much romance but I tried to recently because I do need to read more diversly 😉 even though fantasy is still the best genre 😛 just saying xD
1-Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen
I had to start with an obvious choice. I think most people read this book xD but it’s always fun to reread it. Every girl admits that she dreams of her very own Mr Darcy and let’s be honest even the tv shows and movies are great. 🙂 But for those who did not read it here’s the story: Young Elizabeth Bennet lives in the countryside with her family (her parents and her three sisters). Her life is peaceful and she enjoys reading and walks in nature but the new arrival of Mr Darcy and his friend Mr Bingley will blow a wind of matrimony in the life of the Bennet family. If you love classics and Regency England, quadrilles and marriages this is for you ^^
2-The Princess Bride William Goldman
Another obvious one xD most fantasy fans will know this one ^^. This book is the story of romance meets adventure with the words of the author itself. Besides the interesting writing style of this book and the memorable « I am Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die,’ the plot is really good and prepare to stay up all night because you won’t be able to put it down! It is presented as a retelling of an already existing story (of course it is not) and the reader gets to it through the memory of the author who heard it from his grandfather. Lost already? Don’t worry explaining it is confusing but reading it is awesome sauce. The tale is as follows: Buttercup and Westley are in love with each other but they get separated and Buttercup is forced to marry Prince Humperdinck. But it is so much more than that: thieves, revenge, torture, giant rat, six fingers evil count, horses; friendship, magic, memory loss and I cannot tell everything. You’re still here? GO READ IT!
3-The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend Katarina Bivald
(Yeah I put the French cover because I’m in love with it *.*) This was one of my favourite books from 2015 and can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone. Even if you don’t like contemporary you will be moved to the core. Sara is a 28 yo women living in Sweden, she works as a librarian and doesn’t like people. She engages in a correspondence with Amy, an old woman from Broken Wheel Iowa. Sara decides to come to the US to meet Amy but when she arrives Amy had just passed away. She decides to stay in the small town with intriguing characters and open a bookshop. So much feel in this book and in both books by Katarina Bivald, she has the ability to make you cry and laugh at the same time. Trust me you will fall in love with this book.
4-The Summer of Living Dangerously Julie Cohen
Since we are talking of good contemporary novels (HA HA HA no, I don’t diss the contemporary genre I just love fantasy ;P), here is another one that I read a few years back in one sitting(meaning it was very good). Alice, a young divorced woman, has the opportunity to take a summer job in a Regency stately home. She has to act as a character of that era and soon she is forced to look back on her life. If you love Jane Austen you will love this book, it might not be the novel of your life but it has the cozy atmosphere that romance needs and every Austenian trait.
5-Sora Log Kako Mitsuki
For those who love manga here it is! No, I did not choose Nana or any Ai Yazawa titles for this list because I wanted something lighter. Sora Log is a four-volume series (really short for a manga xD) with amazing art and a cute story. Hikaru has a love for the sky and stars. She is a joyful, easy-going girl who encounters Asao a fellow classmate quite mysterious who seems to know her somehow. I am a sucker for red string romance or drama so this one is absolutely the cutest!
6-Sekaiichi Hatsukoi 世界一初恋 Shungiku Nakamura
Another manga, fujoshi unite!!! Yes, this one is a yaoi manga but before you judge read this: this is the most adorable story of two idiots in love. You need more convincing? Okay! Ritsu Onodera is the son of a famous owner of a literature editing house but after being accused of having his job because of his father he decides to change of editing house and became a manga editor at Emerald publishing. Only he gets assigned to the shojo section and his new boss is his first and only love Takano Masamune. I have to admit that I did not like Nakamura-sama’s first series but this one is absolutely genius. Funny and heart-warming if you want to know more about Emerald shojo editors here’s a series to read!
7-Pies and Prejudice (Charmed Pie Shoppe Mysteries #1) Ellery Adams
Let’s go back to literature a bit. 😉 This series is a cozy-mystery one. For those who are not aware, cozy mysteries are in the line of Agatha Christie so if you enjoy her novels you should enjoy them. But bear in mind that they are somehow « lighter » meaning the mood is really … cozy (I don’t have any other words …. sorry). Ellery Adams series is about Ella Mae LaFaye who after a rough break up moves back to her hometown and opens a pie shop but she soon discovers that she has mysterious magical powers. Along with that she has to face her old crush Hugh Dylan. In the first book the romance is not that much important but still I had to put it on the list because I read these books on Valentine’s Day so they are thematic somehow xD. The series has five books, I only read four of them but they were really good.
8-The Language of Flowers Vanessa Diffenbaugh
I had to put one sad story in this list, and it is the story of Victoria Jones. A young lady with no family who learns the victorian language of flowers to communicate with people. I won’t say much on this book without spoiling anyone. Just beware my firends, if you start this book better have a pack of tissues next to you ready to use.
9-Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch Pink Hanamori, Michiko Yokote
The last manga on this list!!! And this is one of my favorite shojo series while growing up. It is a bit of a retelling of the little mermaid but veru loose. Lucia is a mermaid princess who has to save the water world from an evil force but while on earth she meets a cute surfer Kaito who she already met as a little mermaid. Another red string romance but the art is very good and the plot catchy. The series has seven-volumes and only gets better.
10-Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Seth Grahame-Smith, Jane Austen
Last but not least!!! Should I really say more than the title? Just know that it Pride and Prejudice but with combats, zombies and martial art. I havent’s seen the movie yet and I have no idea it it is out or not so I cannot help on that but the book is BAMF!
